The following article was original published at The Ugly Side of Social Media on the site O'Mahony Donnelly E-Business.

For a long time, I’ve somewhat denied the ugly side of social media. Using social media has done a lot for me personally and professionally. Professionally I’ve made great contacts to people I never thought I’d meet, online or off. I’ve learned a lot from many of the experts and not so experts in my field and others that related to what I do. Personally I’ve made friends locally and further afield and again, I’ve learned a lot about life and many other things.

I saw social media as being an important part of an online marketing plan and one that I recommended to clients and just about everyone I met. Social media marketing for business became a product that I sold – implementation and training – as did many in the industry — some as experienced as me, some maybe more so and many less so. There is a negative undercurrent about the rise of the vast number of ‘social media experts’ and I would be one that was a bit critical of those with little experience (gave a talk last year ‘How (NOT) to be a social media expert’), but in time saw that like me most of these people are trying to share a skill that they found valuable to them; whether their intentions were to be helpful, build popularity or to make a living. We’ve all got to make a living, right?!

The rise of the ‘social media expert’ popped up out of a demand from people who want to learn how to use social media for their businesses. It may come naturally to some, but many others are looking for assistance, whether it be training, coaching or a good article on the topic. There are posts and posts, webinars, books, online courses, offline workshops, etc. by individuals, accredited institutions and government backed organisations. As so many people seem to be struggling with actually getting results from all the time put into using social media, I focus on putting together a plan so that you will use social media to get better results of your business.

In social media, as in most aspects of business, you’ve got to take the good with the bad – controlling the bad as much as possible. Many people are hesitant to get involved in social media because they feel exposed – exposed to criticism, personal attacks, etc. It does happen but not as often as you may fear, as long as your business is not doing anything that may merit an excessive amount of criticism and personal attacks. Like email spam, the more ‘popular’ you are (the more followers, posts, etc.) the more likely you are to get ‘an attack’. I advise my clients to weigh up the pros & cons of replying to negative posts. It’s good to reply if you can clear up a misconception, as is common place online without face to face communication. It’s best not to be emotional but interact to clear up the issue or misunderstand and move on. If the post is mean or an obvious attempt to start a heated debate it’s probably best to avoid an interaction.

The real point of this post is to expose myself as someone who doesn’t follow my own advice. When I get criticism or someone tries to pull me into a heated debate I get very emotional. Maybe it’s because it doesn’t happen too often. Maybe its because I’m a girl. Maybe because it’s against my naive feeling that if you ‘do the right thing’, everything will be alright and you avoid conflict. So maybe we can all learn from a recent experience:

I was asked to be a regular contributor for Search Engine Journal a few years ago. I was very honoured as I felt it was a great blog and well respected in my industry. I struggled to find time to write these posts with all the other work I had, but I worked hard to do quality articles when I could. Most of the topics I covered came from questions that I’d get asked over and over by clients and others I’d talk about online marketing with. One month I wrote How to Get Twitter Followers. It turned out to be the most popular article I’ve written. Search Engine Journal has a lot of subscribers. The posts are fed into a lot of other sites and tweeted to a good number of followers who then retweet like mad. Some people may not like that idea but it gets an article out to readers who are interested in the topic. Due to the popularity of SEJ and it’s good Google PageRank and my optimising of the article it comes up top or very high for a very popular phrase. I was so pleased when an online marketer in Mexico translated the article into Spanish for his blog.

To be completely immodest, the article isn’t just done well technically, but the content is good. It’s a topic that people want to read about. It contains information on why you need to balance quality and quantity. It contains information about ‘black hat’ techniques to avoid so you don’t get into trouble with your social media channels or just annoy people. In the 11 months since the post was published, on average I get one reply on Twitter each day thanking me for the article and saying how great it is. That makes me feel good. I love seeing where in the world the comment comes from and what type of business the person is in. Sometimes I retweet those because I want to share this with my ‘friends’ – share my joy, share my article and introduce them to this wonderful person that took his time to thank me. I retweet other people’s articles and joy a lot so, though it is a little out of my own ‘humble’ comfort zone, I thought why not share my own.

Now the ugly part, suddenly one of my ‘friends’ decides to take issue with my article and sends a kind of RT with a negative comment, then another common ‘friend’ decides to retweet with his own comment. Why did this hit me so hard?

These were people I had actually met and are fairly local to me. In all these years very few of my local online marketing community have supported my posts with retweets, while I’ve had great support by others in the industry outside this ‘circle’ — and now this? I think some of this stemmed from that fact that I joked with the first person that he had just reached 40,000 posts – I love celebrating something like that myself – and now see that he didn’t take it as a joke and marked me as someone obsessed with numbers.

Each has a large following so a negative comment could go a long way.

I thought that the comment was unfair and taken out of the context of the article — making it seem that I was saying that numbers are important. The article starts off saying you need to balance quality and quantity and shows how to get relevant followers as opposed to just building numbers “…you need to balance out your activities to get numbers versus activities aimed at gaining specific followers in your target market…”

One of the comments focused on the ‘black hat techniques’ while it’s clear in my article that these are things to watch out for and not to do: “You will come across these methods as you go along and it’s important that you know how to spot techniques that may bring you more trouble than benefits.”

The microscope I held on others was being pointed at me.

My upbringing trained me that ‘pride goeth before a fall’. I had retweeted something good about me, so of course something bad was going to happen!

I was sick and tired – literally and figuratively. I had kids in and out of school for what seemed like months of juggling work and family; and that day I pulled a muscle in my back and was in severe pain, but as I was very busy had to prop myself up and get work done. Yes, poor me, I know.

I decided that after saying ‘Did you actually read the article?” and they persisted, that there was no point in continuing with the debate. As this wasn’t a debate. It was an attack. I felt that my article speaks for itself and I am still proud of it and still get thank yous and retweets every day and know that it’s helping people – the kind of people I really want to reach on Twitter.

And then I cried and I replied that I cried. The replies back were 1) asking if I was serious and 2) more abuse to the effect that I was using crying as a cheap technique in the debate and why was I so bothered as it was just a comment. Nice. It helped that a few other people that I respect sent direct messages and even rang in support and helped me see more clearly that I shouldn’t take this personally.

The funny thing is that I don’t think about my numbers that much. As someone who is a ‘tweeter for hire’ – live tweeting for events and for clients, etc. – the numbers are important, but I’ve been lucky to organically get okay numbers. They aren’t as massive as some that do a lot of speaking, training groups and get high profile press coverage. I get followers because of those SEJ articles and because there are a lot of people in my industry that search and find people like me. I also get followers because I interact and reach out and help others in a positive way.

In my first couple of years using social media, I’d be one of those taking the high road and commenting on how others use social media — and online marketing in general. I wouldn’t be quite so direct and nasty — and I’d make sure that I was accurate. If I found later that I was wrong I’d go back and correct my statement and apologise if needed. In the past few months a few events have made me less judgemental of others:

A serious incident happened with a client that generated a lot of press and comments online. Many of the comments were false. It was painful to see because I knew that if the client had to close down because of it many good people would lose their jobs. I thought I always made sure I didn’t spread rumours in social media, or would state that it was something that wasn’t verified (probably not good enough, really) but would steer away from anything that could cost jobs or cause other similar harm.

I am no longer actively seeking social media clients, so there’s less competition to think about and more support I can give without worrying about the impact on selling my business.

I’ve come to terms with the fact that I shouldn’t be picking and choosing who to be compassionate with and even masked snide comments can be hurtful to someone’s feelings and possibly to their career.

In getting criticism that is unfair I see how I have unfairly judged others. You only see a small part of a person’s activities and you can’t see completely into their lives, so it’s not fair to judge on a small amount of information. AND, you always have the option to not read that persons’ posts. If they are so in your face you can filter/block them if it’s really needed.

No single user or group of users OWNS the internet or most social media channels. Besides each channels’ own terms and conditions, it’s up to you to decide what techniques and strategies you want to use, just as it is you that will benefit or lose out from the actions you choose to take. I am passionate about social media and like to post without worrying about negative comments that may come. If I let that effect my posts I won’t enjoy it that much and don’t think I’ll be as helpful to others as much — and that is important to me.

So I must admit that there’s an ugly side to Social Media, as there is an ugly side to all parts of life – business and personal. As important as knowing how to handle taking it, is knowing if you really want to be the sort of person that ‘dishes it out’?

The following article was original published at Facebook Business Pages Move to Timeline View by 30th March 2012 on the site O'Mahony Donnelly E-Business.

When Facebook’s new timeline view for profiles rolled out all the online marketers were wondering what this was going to mean for Facebook Business Pages. That seems like years ago, but it is finally rolling out.

When you visit your business page you will get a notice that it is rolling out and can view a preview and choose to use the new format straight away. All pages will automatically get the new design on 30th March.

It’s important to do the preview ASAP and see how your page will look as there may be some key items to update before making the switch:

- Check that your logo will fit the new design. Mine doesn’t (see screen grab). I have been advising clients to get a long rectangular graphic for the left hand ‘logo’ area because it can really show off your brand and include other good selling points. With the new design there is only a small square (like the profile pic on a personal timeline), but you have your cover image to show off your brand – but it’s a completely different dimension to what you would have had on the left hand bar. Time for some new graphic design! Check out Mashable’s gallery 20 Facebook Page Cover Photos to Inspire Your Brand. (Why is the Ford Motor Company’s image of a building and not some flashy cars?!)

- There’s a button for users to send you a message. I wonder if it’s just for those that have liked your page or if anyone can use that. Will also be interesting to see how these messages are sent to you. It will be important to keep up to date on these. Mashable says that we can now send messages to users – that’s what businesses have been begging for — just hope it doesn’t get abused!

- The office hours are prominent and when it’s out of hours it actually says “”Closed now, reopens tomorrow…”, so be sure that the information is correct. I think many of us forgot about the information on the Info page because it was fairly hidden away, now alot of it is prominent across the top of the page.

- What to do with all your apps and custom tabs? You’ll have to rethink it all with the new design. Will they be easy to integrate? Can you just include custom tabs along the top. Now it has Photos, Likes, Map and RSS/Blog – perhaps because of what I had already. To be honest I haven’t had time to develop our own page much, you know, cobbler’s shoes!

- The new Admin Panel looks cool. It drops down from the top of the page so may be easier to work between the admin and viewing your page. There is a button “Build Audience” which I assumed would just be to set up ads, but it has links to Invite Email Contacts, Invite Friends, Share Page and then Create an Ad.

Just what we all needed — more time to go into our social media activities!

A few articles for more on the new Brand Pages:

Can’t wait to see what businesses do with this new layout, especially the cover images. Many people hate the new timeline layout, but I’ve always liked it — maybe just because I was a bit bored with the old layout. The cover images really do have an impact.

So what are you going to do with your Facebook Page?

The following article was original published at CRM for the Social Generation, Nimble 2.0 is Released on the site O'Mahony Donnelly E-Business.

Nimble 2.0 has arrived and I am loving it!

Over the past year the Nimble team have been listening to the feedback of early adopters like myself and have integrated many of the features that we were saying were needed to make Nimble even more powerful. They now have Facebook Page integration, custom fields, more privacy options for those of us working as a team — and many more new features.

Nimble 2.0 focuses on three pillars:

Social Discovery – Each day, it’s hard to know where to start strengthening your relationships. Nimble makes this easy. Every morning Nimble sends you one email full of new engagement opportunities. You’ll also find one unified stream of all your incoming messages, requests, likes and more in the Notifications section under the Social tab.

Improved Usability – At the heart of Nimble is the contact record – the embodiment of the relationship with the customer. Nimble contacts have an all new and improved user interface which effortlessly pulls together all related messages, activities, deals, and includes the contact’s live social stream. Nimble has also added custom fields and tabs to support the unique ways our customers relate to their contacts. In addition, Nimble is just plain faster throughout the application with improved navigation and better data importing tools.

Some comments from other early adopters:

“What I love about this product is the user interface. It’s very easy to find relevant information when I need it. The integration with contact management, activity management, sales and marketing automation, traditional and social media communication tools, and collaboration features into one web-based solution makes it very convenient for people like me to get a pulse of what’s going on in my network.” - Michael Brito, EdelmanDigital

“Nimble is by far the most advanced of the cloud-based CRMs out there. I’ve tried SalesForce, Solve360, Zoho and Affinity Live. Nimble is the cleanest CRM that I’ve seen; and automatically pulls down social network profiles of all your contacts. Seamless integration with Google calendars (a first compared to all of the other CRMs listed above). It’s far more reasonably priced than SalesForce, and a far better product for Google Apps users. It’s obvious that it was started by the same minds behind Goldmine; and why Google invested in the company.” - David Schulman, CloudOPX

“Nimble is the bedrock of our engagement toolset which nurtures our client relationships so that we can successfully meet their needs with our programs and services. Thanks Nimble, for putting engagement first in your product.” - Israel Vicars, Aegis

“I use many different systems, some for team management, some for client communication, some for task and productivity. I recently started using Nimble and find that it is among the top 4 windows that need to be open on my desktop at all time. It’s a really intuitive CRM that connects my email, social media and contact and deal information in one easily accessible location. Highly recommended if you’re looking to make your business more efficient and productive.”– Steve Lack, Genlack

I coach my clients to plan interactions with their prospects and customers (whether by email, phone or social media – depending on the situation) at many points along the way: first interaction, meetings (planned or casual), point of sale, after sale and hopefully return business. Email marketing is a great tool for after sales follow-up.

I booked a hotel stay via SuperValu Getaway Breaks and the day after my return, I received an email “Welcome back – we hope you enjoyed your break”. It was personalised (nearly) perfectly with my name, address and the location of my break. It ended with a nice “We hope to see you again soon”.

The downside is that the body of the message boringly recapped the way the Getaway Breaks programme works, which I know because I just went on one. OK, I said ‘good example’ not ‘perfect example’.

How could this have been a perfect follow up?

Invite me to their Facebook Page, which I know they have, and any other social channels they may have, to comment about my trip, maybe even post pictures, etc.

Give details about some of the other breaks on offer for Easter, Summer, etc. that I may be starting to plan for now for return sales opportunities. If you are selling a product this is a good chance to sell accessories and other related or similar products, etc.

Ask if I had any feedback — link to a survey or feedback form. Your customers want to be heard and want to think that you care about how they feel about your business. Even though they know that, really, your priority is to get more business from them; they are more likely to give business to a company that takes on board their feedback.

Many businesses don’t ask for feedback because they are afraid of what they’ll hear or assume that people will tell them without being asked, but in most cases if you don’t ask you won’t get it. I stayed in a hotel last week and I filled out 3 different comment cards that were provided to me — with positive and negative, but honest, feedback on the hotel in general, the spa, restaurant, etc. (As a person who works in customer service and who deals with hotel owners and management, I know that they do want to get the feedback directly so was thorough in my comments.) For the trip related to this email, I provided no feedback to the hotel. There were no cards supplied and no follow-up email, yet.

The main reason for asking for feedback early on, is so that you can address any bad points early on — before they make it on TripAdvisor, some other review website or all around town – or social media channels – via word of mouth.

Because SuperValu Getaway Breaks has all customers in their database with contact details and dates of breaks, it is easy for them to automate this kind of follow-up. Smaller businesses may have to do this manually, but as it is easier/cheaper/more effective to market to existing customers so very much worth doing manually or setting up an automated system.

Get the wording and tone right. Don’t appear greedy or that you are sending this just to sell, sell, sell. By asking to post on Facebook or complete a survey, you have a good excuse for getting in touch.

Get your timing right. In this case I thought it was nice to get the message the day after my return and, if they asked for feedback or had a survey, the information would be fresh in my mind. Their push for me to book more breaks when I still haven’t unpacked from this one is a bit lost at this point. Another email in a few months — or if they had enticed me specifically for a break in the future, I may have had a look at the site. If you are selling a product that wears out or offers an upgrade, these are good times to follow-up. The timing will depend on your product/service and your clients. As I always say, you need to know your target market and what is right for them.

Regular newsletters or newsletters that you publish when you have news or special offers can do very well for you, but an email that is perfectly timed based on customer/prospect interactions will be the best tool for for your business as it will work much better at building community, getting feedback and driving repeat sales.

Do you use email marketing for after sales follow-up? or other events related to specific interactions with your clients? What system do you use to automate these messages?

As I said, I’ve just started, so I am not sure if this really is going to have an impact on my own productivity, but I thought it sounded like a useful application and was worth trying out with the current 50% discount which got me a 1 year for $36.

If it turns out to be useful, I’ll be upgrading to a business account and setting it up on all the computers. I don’t want to go all “Big Brother” on the staff – no one has given us any reason to worry – but I do think it’s important to see how much time is being spent on what activities/applications. Besides giving insight into individual productivity, it will also be a good way to evaluate the applications you are using and to see if you may need to replace some with more effective/efficient applications.

The following article was original published at Custom Permalink WordPress Plugin on the site O'Mahony Donnelly E-Business.

Any regular user of WordPress knows that you can customise your URLs under Settings – Permalinks in the control panel. Here you can indicate to use the post/page title for the pages URL (aka slug) which is more SEO and user friendly. There are still some limitations, particularly when you have sub pages and WordPress insists on including the parent page slug in your URL. If you have sub-sub-pages etc. the URL then gets very long. (i.e. http://e-business.ie/parent-page/sub-page/sub-sub-page).

I’ve looked and looked for a way to change WordPress or theme settings to avoid these lengthy URLs but it seems the only way around this is using the Custom Permalink WordPress Plugin. When using this plugin you have complete control over the slugs for pages, posts and category archive pages. Just install the plugin and you will then have more control over editing post/page slugs on the edit screen, in the usual area to do this under the Title. There will be a new option for this when adding/editing a category.

When using this plugin, you still need to customise the URLs via WordPress’s own Permalink settings, but you will then be able to customise the slugs further via this plugin.

This is particularly handy when you enable the Network function for WordPress using sub-domain. If your site has been set up for awhile before you do this, it automatically adds “/blog” to your posts to avoid any conflict with the network pages using the subdomain. If your site is indexed by Google you don’t want all your urls to change suddenly. You’d need to change each post/page, which could be tedious.

Do you use the Custom Permalink WordPress plugin, or do you use another plugin or technique to control permalinks to the extent that you need? Please comment here if you have any experience in this area.

Nimble CRM now includes integration of Facebook Pages and Google+ so you can monitor your contacts’ interactions in all of the key social channels.

You can add your Facebook Page under Networks and monitor activity on your page while you are in Nimble via its own tab or in the ‘All’ stream with your other networks – Twitter, LinkedIn and personal Facebook account. One downside is that you can only add one Facebook Page, as far as I can see, but remember Nimble is brand new and I think that all of these features will be tweaked and probably not too far in the future.

You can also indicate Google+ accounts for your contacts and now see all interactions they have on Google+. The downside is this — it makes it even more obvious when your connections post the same thing across all their networks all the time. Bo-ring people! Also, there isn’t a Google+ tab to monitor activity.

The following article was original published at Nimble Social CRM – A New Partnership for Real Results with Social Media Marketing on the site O'Mahony Donnelly E-Business.

I am very excited to announce our new partnership with Nimble, the next generation of CRM (Customer Relationship Management) applications. Nimble brings together not only the contact details of your current email contact list and your social media connections, it allows you to view conversations from your email, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn all in one panel. Then you can set tasks, reply, whatever you need to do to move that conversation to a sale for your business!

Since I started managing social media campaigns, our own as well as for clients, I felt the one thing that kept us from making sales rather than just networking, was the missing link between our existing CRM with prospect information and all the data online for Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. I searched and searched for a solution to this.

We first tried SugarCRM which had no social media focus at the time, then they added a Twitter account field which was populated from the name field — with a space between the first and last names. They obviously did not understand social. You can imagine my emails between support on that topic. What burned me was that they made me feel like a troublesome, ignorant client and didn’t seem to feel that this was an important issue. After two years with SugarCRM we never had our data in and clean as it wasn’t as integrated with existing systems so always an extra chore for someone.

Then we tried SalesForce. Now it was just a trial, so I may not be the best judge of the system, but can only tell of my experience in relation to what I wanted from the system. I hadn’t considered SalesForce before because it was more expensive, but when I was looking for an alternative to Sugar, there was a cheaper option. (I missed the small print that it was a special offer price, so after awhile the cost would go up — Sugar did the same thing.) Of course, with the cheaper option you don’t get all of the features that you really would need to use your CRM properly. I decided to give it a try as I had heard that they were adding social networking channels into the mix, but in my trial I couldn’t find this. So again frustrated after setting up the trial, uploading data, etc.

We had recently switched to using Google Apps with GMail as our main email application. I use other Google products heavily and we were looking for ways to reduce cost and also reduce the drag on our computers that applications like Outlook do. Frustrated from my interactions with these CRM applications — and especially the sales reps from these companies, I looked to see if there was a product that worked with Google apps that could at least help with sharing contact information across members of our team.

That’s when I found Nimble, which at the time was still in Beta with only a few of the features it has now. When I saw that it would truly integrate the information from my social networking contacts with the existing business contacts — and give the ability to share with the team — I was over the moon. I signed up for a trial straight away. I couldn’t wait to set up the account and upload and integrate the contacts, so excited to see all the information in once place! The interface was so easy! When I did have a question their support team was back to me very quickly and when I shouted out to them on Twitter, they were so cool too. I had a chat with Founder/CEO Jon Ferrara about his family connections to Cork — and that he better set up his EMEA office in Cork when the time comes! All of the Nimble team are on Twitter and LinkedIn, showing that they really get what social media is all about.

I knew I had made the right decision when I was able to get access to the new features they would be rolling out in the full version of Nimble with more control over sharing, better views of conversations and ability to make tasks out of them. When I started with the Beta version it was all free (which was a great incentive for me to try it), but with the roll out of the full version in January 2012 it will still be free for a single user, but $15/month/user for a multi-user account. Still not a bad price for a solution that is really going to increase your sales.

After a couple of conversations with the Nimble team I have signed up as a Solutions Partner, marrying up my social media marketing expertise with this excellent product. I only partner with and recommend products that I use and truly believe in and I believe in Nimble and that using Nimble will improve the effectiveness of social media campaigns. What’s even more exciting is that this is just the beginning for Nimble and as the first real SocialCRM product there will be new features rolling out. I will be sure to provide my feedback and suggestions along the way.

To get more results for your business from your social media activities, I recommend that you sign up for the free single user account and you will see how great it us, then upgrade to multi-user to share across your team.

Hopefully you’ve read my post about Coder Dojo and what a great initiative it is for kids and the others involved – mentors, parents, supporters. Well, attendence and support is growing and growing and to celebrate we are having a Christmas party and inviting all interested.

So if you have been thinking about coming in with your kids, or dropping by to help as a mentor, this is s great chance to stop in and meet the gang. I know it’s a busy time, but we’re right next to Mahon Point Shopping Centre.

Dojos have opened all over the country and spreading abroad, but it all started in Cork and we’re getting great support from the local tech community – from Hackerspace to Cork Open Coffee and other contacts that James and Bill and others involved have got in. The kids have done a lot of great things – not just Harry Moran making headlines as Apple’s youngest app developer, but the start of many more games and websites — and budding tech giants.

We are asking everyone to bring something to share, but are really pleased that Dominos in Douglas Village is sponsoring pizza — many thanks to Cathal McDonnell for that! If anyone else is interested in sponsoring any goodies, please leave a post below.

Unfortunately our regular mentor Will Knott cannot attend because he’s doing a carol-athon in Dublin this weekend. We’ll miss you Will!

I believe that children are our future, treat them well and, well you know how the song goes.

Hope to see you on Saturday! Hey, anybody got a karaoke app?!
